Coffee Milk Jugs Built for Every Pour, From Practice to Competition

The spout shape, weight and volume behind every clean latte art pour.

A milk jug is a spouted stainless steel pitcher used to steam and pour milk for espresso drinks. Spout shape and jug volume determine pour control and drink size.

Coffee milk jugs shape how your espresso drink looks and pours: the spout width, wall angle and handle balance decide whether your latte art holds together or collapses into froth. We stock jugs from 350ml single-cup sizes up to 1lt café pitchers, in traditional stainless steel, ceramic-coated colour finishes and competition latte art pitchers, sourced from the brands baristas actually reach for.

Every milk jug does two jobs: it lets you steam milk to the right texture, and it gives you the control to pour that texture into a shape.

Spout shape decides your pour

The spout is what separates a barista jug from a beginner's jug. A tight, pulled spout, like the iKape V2 Milk Pitcher or the MHW-3Bomber GT Milk Jug, slows the pour into a fine, controllable stream for rosettas and tulips. A wider classic spout, the kind on a Rhinowares Classic 950ml or a Trenton 400ml, is built for volume rather than Precision.

Size and material

Size matters more than people think. A 350-450ml jug, like the Coffee Parts Classic 360ml or the Crema Pro 360ml, suits a single flat white or cappuccino, with enough headroom to whisk in microfoam without overfilling. Step up to 600ml, such as the MHW-3Bomber 5.0 or Airflow 600ml, for back-to-back drinks, and 950ml to 1lt for café volume. Material changes how a jug feels and holds heat. 304 stainless steel is the standard: food-grade, dishwasher-safe, resistant to milk taint. Ceramic-coated colour finishes trade a little heat retention for a jug that's easier to read at a glance behind a busy bar. We've stocked coffee milk jugs since 1999, and the spout is still the first thing we check before anything else.

Milk jug sizes at a glance

Coffee milk jug sizes aren't standardised the way you'd expect. A '350ml' jug and a '360ml' jug from two different brands won't fill to the same line, so treat the numbers below as a guide, not a spec sheet.

SizeBest for
350-450mlOne flat white or cappuccino; where most latte art students start
500-600mlTwo flat whites, or one large latte, without a second steam
950ml-1ltCafé bars pouring back-to-back milk drinks

Learning latte art at home

Start small and tight-spouted. A 350-450ml jug like the Pesado 490ml Latte Art Milk Jug or the Fellow Eddy 500ml gives you less milk to manage while you're still learning wrist control, and a fluted or tapered spout makes the first rosette easier to pull off than a wide classic spout will. Our competition pitchers range groups the jugs built for this exact job.

Running a café bar

Go bigger and prioritise durability over spout finesse: a Rhinowares Classic 950ml or a Coffee Accessories 1lt holds enough milk that you're not re-filling mid-service, and heavier-gauge stainless steel handles the daily bench knocks better than a lightweight competition jug.

Reading the temperature, not guessing it

The Latte Pro 480ml builds a stick-on thermometer into both sides of the jug, so left- and right-handers can both read it mid-pour without reaching for a separate probe.

Ready for more control

Once the basics are dialled in, a dedicated latte art pitcher with a narrower, more engineered spout, like the Timemore Rosetta 700ml or Kruve Create Pitcher with its three interchangeable spout inserts, is the step up from a general-purpose espresso milk jug. If colour and finish matter to you as much as pour, our colourful pitchers range covers everything from matte black to iridescent.

One honest note: a milk pitcher for latte art is a skill tool, not a shortcut. The jug narrows your margin for error; it doesn't remove it. Get the size right for your drink first, the spout right for your skill level second, and the colour last.

Australia has won the World Latte Art Championship four times: Scottie Callaghan (2006), Jack Hanna (2007), Con Haralambopoulos (2008) and Caleb Cha (2015), more titles than any other nation has managed in the discipline. Every one of those pours started with spout control from a jug, not a machine setting. The Timemore Rosetta 700ml jug in this range comes from a brand that was Top Sponsor of the 2025 World Brewers Cup in Jakarta; we're the exclusive distributor of Timemore in Australia.

A jug on its own is half the setup. If you're still learning to judge steaming temperature by feel, the Latte Pro 480ml has a stick-on thermometer built into the handle side, or add a separate digital thermometer to any jug you already own. Rinsing jugs between drinks on a busy bench? A dedicated milk jug rinser keeps residue off the counter and out of the next pour. And because milk left sitting in a warm jug sours fast, a quick wipe with Cafetto's cleaning range after each session keeps stainless steel smelling like stainless steel, not yesterday's flat white.

I still remember which jug my dad kept next to the workbench to test new steam wands: a battered Rhinowares no one could bring themselves to throw out. Milk jugs don't get warranty claims or service tickets, so they're the accessory people rarely think to ask us about. But we know the difference a jug makes, because we watch new baristas fight the same tight, uncontrolled pour every week, then relax the moment we hand them one with the right spout for their hand. Buy the size for your drink, not the biggest one on the shelf. Pedro Lara

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good milk jug for latte art? +

Look for a tapered or pulled spout rather than a wide pour lip: it slows and narrows the stream so you can control where the milk lands. The Fellow Eddy 500ml, Pesado 490ml and iKape V2 all use this style of spout. Weight matters too; a jug that's too light or too heavy for your hand makes the wrist motion harder to repeat consistently, which is the real skill behind a clean pour.

What size should you use for latte art? +

Most people learning latte art start on a 350-450ml jug, sized for one flat white or cappuccino. It's small enough that you're not fighting excess volume while you're still working out wrist angle and pour height. Once you're consistent, step up to 500-600ml to steam for two drinks at once without changing technique.

Do you need a jug to froth milk? +

If you're steaming on an espresso machine's steam wand, yes: the pitcher's shape and spout are what give you pour control, not just froth. If you're not using a steam wand, an electric frother or a handheld frothing tool can texture milk on its own, though you'll still need something to pour the result from.

What can I use instead of a frothing pitcher? +

An electric milk frother, like the Subminimal NanoFoamer Pro Gen 2, textures milk hands-free without a steam wand or pitcher technique, and comes with flow controllers for both dairy and plant-based milk. It won't give you the same pour control as a pitcher for latte art, but it's a genuine alternative if you just want microfoam without the learning curve.

Why do pitchers have different spout shapes? +

Spout shape controls flow rate and stream width. A tight, hawksbill-style spout like the iKape V2's slows the pour into a fine line for rosettas and tulips; a wider classic spout, like the Rhinowares Classic 950ml's, pours faster with less Precision, which suits volume over pattern work. Neither is better in the abstract; it depends on whether you're pouring for speed or for detail.

Is stainless steel dishwasher safe? +

Most 18/10 or 304 stainless steel pitchers in our range, including the Rocket Espresso 350ml and Trenton 400ml, are dishwasher safe. Ceramic-coated or painted-finish pieces (like the Coffee Accessories range) should be hand-washed instead, since dishwasher heat and detergent can dull a painted finish over time.

What is 12oz in millilitres? +

12oz converts to roughly 350ml, which is why you'll see the same jug marketed as '350ml' and '12oz' interchangeably across brands. It's the standard single-drink size for a flat white or cappuccino, and the size most latte art students are taught on first.
