Coffee machine accessories that change what lands in the cup

Tampers, WDT tools, scales, portafilters, milk jugs and cleaning gear for home benches and cafe bars

TL;DR: Coffee machine accessories are the tools around an espresso machine: tampers like the Laybird TriPress, scales like the Acaia Pearl, WDT tools, baskets, milk jugs and cleaning gear.

Most people upgrade the machine and leave the tools alone. That is backwards. A tamper that presses the same way every time, a scale that reads to 0.1g and a group head that is actually clean will move a shot further than more hardware. We have been selling coffee machine accessories since 1999, for home benches and cafe workflows, from Laybird and Pesado through to Cafetto cleaning chemicals. Below: puck prep, measurement, milk, cleaning, and what to buy first.

Accessories fail quietly. A group gasket hardens and the portafilter creeps past the lugs. A scale with a slow refresh reads the end of the pour instead of the pour itself. A basket that does not match the portafilter channels every shot and the blame lands on the grinder. None of that announces itself, so most people live with it.

What we have learned at the bench

After 25 years of fitting parts to machines, here is what we know: silicone group seals outlast rubber. The CP E61 silicone gaskets we stock measure 73mm outside, 57mm inside, in 8mm and 8.5mm thicknesses, and a worn one shows up as water leaking around the portafilter or a handle that locks past its usual position. Puck prep is the other place the difference is real. The Timemore AutoSpin runs a 12-needle orbital head on straight-wall 58mm baskets, and it removes the user from the equation. The Laybird TriPress presses at a calibrated 25lb every time, with a levelling guard and threaded base to keep the bed even. Cleaning is the part people skip. The Espazzola V2 mounts into the group like a portafilter and uses the machine's own hot water rather than a hand brush. Cafetto Renew is organic-certified and safe on aluminium, brass and stainless boilers. Every product in this category has been tested on the bench before it earned its place on the shelf.

How to choose coffee machine accessories

Work in the order the coffee travels. Grind, dose, distribute, tamp, extract, clean. Buying out of order is how benches fill up with tools that never get used.

Start with the basket and portafilter

The basket is the cheapest part of the machine and the one doing the most work, and sizing matters more than brand. 58mm is the commercial standard; Breville domestic machines take 54mm. If you are not sure, measure the portafilter, not the machine badge. Browse Precision filter baskets by size. A bottomless portafilter, such as the Pesado stainless bottomless for LM and E61 groups, shows you channelling as it happens, which makes it the cheapest diagnostic tool on the bench. See bottomless portafilters.

Then fix distribution

Clumps in the basket cause channelling no tamper can fix. A WDT tool breaks them up before tamping. The Timemore AutoSpin automates the job with a 12-needle orbital head for straight-wall 58mm baskets, so the result does not depend on who is holding it. Compare options under WDT tools.

Tamping: consistency beats force

Search demand for a coffee tamper is enormous, and the honest answer is that weight and finish matter less than repeatability. The Laybird TriPress delivers a calibrated 25lb press regardless of technique; the iKape V3 uses dual springs to guide a straight, balanced press at 58.35mm. Add a corner mat like the iKape V2 so the portafilter sits flat. See tampers and tamping mats.

Measure the shot

Espresso is a game of ratios. A common starting recipe is 1:2, 18g of grounds to 36g of espresso, and without a scale under the portafilter you are guessing. Scott Rao's extraction methodology is built on weighing everything, and the scales here are chosen for that job: the Acaia Pearl reads to 0.1g with a real-time flow-rate display and five brewing modes, the Timemore Black Mirror Basic 3 has an Espresso mode alongside Regular and Pour-Over, and the Laybird MagAttach adds a magnetic dosing cup for single-dose workflows. Setting up a brew bar instead? The brew bar scales are chosen for server size and bloom timing, a different job.

Milk and glassware

A jug with a defined spout controls the pour. The Coffee Parts Classic jugs, in 360ml and 600ml, are full stainless with a barista-friendly handle. A Peakabrew stick-on thermometer takes the guesswork out of milk temperature. Without a steam wand, the Subminimal NanoFoamer V2 Lithium makes microfoam on a 3.7V rechargeable battery with two speeds. Kruve Propel 75ml espresso glasses and Imagine 250ml double-wall porcelain finish the drink. More at milk jugs.

Cleaning is not optional

Cafetto S15 tablets are non-corrosive and made for super-automatic machines. Cafetto Renew descales boilers and milk lines. Espazzola membranes are consumables, so buy the replacement with the tool. A coffee knock box keeps spent pucks off the bench; see knocking tubes and cleaning products.

Timemore was Top Sponsor of the 2025 World Brewers Cup in Jakarta, and MHW-3Bomber was Gold Sponsor of the 2025 World Barista Championship in Milan. Coffee Parts is the exclusive distributor for both brands in Australia. That is why the Timemore Black Mirror Basic 3, the AutoSpin and the MHW-3Bomber ESP scale sit in this category with full local warranty rather than through a grey import channel.

A workable home espresso kit is smaller than most people expect. One basket sized to your portafilter, a WDT tool, a tamper with a mat, a scale that reads to 0.1g with a timer, and a cleaning kit covering group brush, backflush detergent, descaler and a blind basket. Add a milk jug if you steam. That is the whole list. Pair it with a coffee grinder that holds its setting, and with water filters, because scale inside a boiler is the one failure no accessory can undo. If you would rather not assemble it piece by piece, the barista kits bundle the same logic.

The question I get most is which accessory to buy first. It is almost never the shiny one. Nine times out of ten it is a basket that matches the portafilter and a scale that reads fast enough to catch the shot. Do those two and the rest of the workflow starts making sense. My dad started this in 1999 with a bench, a Faema E61 and a lot of trial and error, and the tools that survived that bench are the ones we still stock.

— Pedro Lara

Frequently Asked Questions

What accessories do you need for an espresso machine? +

A basket that matches the portafilter diameter (58mm commercial, 54mm on Breville domestic machines), a WDT tool, a tamper and mat, a scale with 0.1g resolution and a timer, and a cleaning kit with a group brush, backflush detergent, descaler and a blind basket. Add a milk jug if you steam. Everything else is optional until those are in place.

Is a coffee tamper worth it? +

Yes, if the tamp is currently inconsistent. A tamper does not compress coffee for its own sake; it creates an even bed so water cannot find a fast path. Any flat-base tamper that matches your basket diameter will do the job. A calibrated model such as the Laybird TriPress applies a constant 25lb press regardless of who is using it, which removes technique as a variable.

Does a coffee scoop hold one or two tablespoons? +

A standard scoop is two tablespoons, roughly 10g of grounds, though bean density changes the weight considerably. That variability is why scoops are unreliable for espresso. Weighing the dose on a scale with 0.1g resolution gives a repeatable recipe where a scoop only gives a range.

Why bother with knock boxes? +

It gives the spent puck somewhere to go. Knocking the portafilter against a padded bar drops the puck into a bin instead of the sink, keeps grounds out of the plumbing and off the bench, and makes the next shot faster. For a home bench a compact knocking tube is enough; cafes usually want a larger bench-mounted unit.

Which scale should I use for espresso? +

One that fits under the portafilter and updates fast enough to follow the pour. The Acaia Pearl reads to 0.1g with a real-time flow-rate display and five brew modes. The Timemore Black Mirror Basic 3 has a dedicated Espresso mode alongside Regular and Pour-Over. The MHW-3Bomber ESP is built for compact setups with one-touch bean weighing.

How often should backflushing and descaling happen? +

Backflush a solenoid group with detergent weekly and rinse-backflush daily, using a blind basket. Brush the group head and gasket each day the machine is used. Descaling depends on water hardness and volume; Cafetto Renew is safe for aluminium, brass and stainless boilers. Super-automatic machines use Cafetto S15 tablets on the schedule the manufacturer specifies.

Can I get microfoam without a steam wand? +

Yes. The Subminimal NanoFoamer V2 Lithium runs a 3.7V rechargeable battery with two speeds and produces microfoamed milk for cappuccinos and flat whites at home. It will not match a commercial wand for volume, but the texture is suitable for latte art in a standard jug.

Are group head gaskets an accessory or a spare part? +

Both, depending on how you shop. The CP E61 silicone seals sit in this accessories range because they are a routine consumable, and they are also listed under spare parts by machine model. Silicone is worth choosing over rubber because it does not bake hard, so removal at replacement time is far easier.
