Proper espresso on the road, from a portable espresso machine

Hand lever, battery powered and travel press brewers, dialled in and tested since 1999.

A portable espresso machine brews pressurised espresso away from mains power, using a hand pump or a battery heater. Most accept ground coffee, capsules, or both.

Campsites, hotel rooms, office kitchens, long drives: the coffee is usually the weak Link. A portable espresso machine carries pressure and heat with you, so the shot travels too. This part of manual brewing covers hand lever brewers, battery heated makers, travel presses and the grinders that feed them. Work out how you will power it first, then match grind and basket to the brewer.

Portable espresso splits into three honest groups, and the group you choose decides everything else. Hand lever brewers such as the Flair GO Grounds Model and the Nomad by Uniterra take no power at all: you supply hot water and the pressure, which makes them the reliable choice for camping and off grid trips. Battery heated makers such as the Outin Nano, the Cera+ PCM03S and the Timemore x Nuttii do the heating for you. Outin publishes 20 bar pressure, a 7500 mAh battery, and roughly 200 seconds to heat cold water, with a body weighing about 670 grams. Immersion brewers such as the AeroPress sit in a third group entirely: the Original arrived in 2005 with a patented three in one method, and the AeroPress GO followed in 2019 packing everything into its own mug. We have been selling and supporting travel brewers for years, and the pattern in returns is consistent: the failure is almost never the brewer. It is grind. Every one of these devices asks for a specific grind window, and supermarket pre ground will not hold pressure. That is why a hand grinder or a portable electric grinder belongs in the same bag as the brewer.

Start with power, because it removes half the catalogue in one decision. If you want espresso where there is no charger, a manual lever such as the Flair GO or the Nomad is the safer travel espresso maker: nothing to flatten, nothing to recharge, and you control the pressure curve by hand. If you want one button and no kettle, a battery unit is the better camping espresso maker. The Outin Nano, the Cera+ MAX PRO and the iKape V1 all heat cold water and extract on their own, and the Wacaco Pixapresso handles grounds or capsules in a single body. Second, decide your coffee format. Grounds give you control and let you change roast whenever you like. Capsules give you speed and no cleanup, which matters in a car or a hotel room. Several units on this page accept both, and the Outin Nano Basket Plus increases dose for anyone finding a single basket too short. Third, be realistic about grind. A portable espresso maker is a fine grind device, and the grinder is the part most people under budget. The Timemore Whirly 01S and the Cera+ CGE03 are built for exactly this job. Our hand coffee grinders range covers the manual alternative. Fourth, consider what else is going in the bag. Cases, silicone mats and the Outin Universal Coffee Stand keep a brew tidy on an uneven surface. Fifth, be honest about volume. Portable espresso is a single shot format. If you are brewing for two or three people every morning, an AeroPress or a moka pot will serve the group better and pack smaller. And if the trip is a genuine camping trip rather than a work trip, our camping range is built around kettles, mugs and durability rather than crema.

Two brands on this page carry championship weight. Coffee Parts is the exclusive distributor of Timemore in Australia, Top Sponsor of the 2025 World Brewers Cup in Jakarta, and of MHW-3Bomber, Gold Sponsor of the 2025 World Barista Championship in Milan. On the press side, Sydney's Jibbi Little took the 2022 World AeroPress Championship. Competition sponsorship does not brew your coffee for you, but it tells you which factories are being held to a standard.

A portable espresso machine on its own is half a kit. The grinder comes first: the Timemore Whirly 01S or the Cera+ CGE03 both grind fine enough for espresso away from the bench. Then protection, because these live in bags: the Outin EVA Protective Case is lined to stop scratches, and the Outin Silicone Coffee Mat keeps grounds off a hotel desk. The Outin Universal Coffee Stand gives you hands free brewing on an uneven surface. If milk matters, the Flair Wizard Steamer makes microfoam on most cooktops without a full machine.

I get asked whether portable espresso is a gimmick more often than any other question in this range. My answer has not changed. Judged against your bench machine at home, it will lose. Judged against the instant sachet in a motel room or the servo cup at six in the morning, it wins easily, and that is the actual comparison you are making. Buy the one that suits how you travel, bring a grinder that can go fine, and it will earn its place in the bag.

— Pedro Lara

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a portable espresso machine worth it? +

It depends what you are comparing it to. Against a bench setup at home, no travel unit will match temperature stability or steam power. Against the coffee actually available on a campsite, in a hotel room, or in an office kitchen, it is a clear improvement. If you already grind your own beans and go away regularly, the gap closes quickly. If you only leave home twice a year, an AeroPress will cost less and pack smaller.

Do I need a separate grinder for travel? +

Almost always, unless you are running capsules exclusively. Every ground coffee model on this page relies on a fine, even particle size to build pressure, and pre ground supermarket bags are usually too coarse and too stale to hold it. The Timemore Whirly 01S or the Cera+ CGE03 solve that electrically. A hand grinder from our manual range does the same job with no battery to manage.

Which is better, Nanopresso or Picopresso? +

They answer different questions. Both are Wacaco hand-pumped units, and the honest way to choose is by how much control you want. The Picopresso range is aimed at people who want a finer grind and a more involved, cafe-style workflow. The Nanopresso range is aimed at people who want a simpler, faster brew with less fuss. Browse the Nanopresso range and the Picopresso range side by side before deciding.

Can I use capsules instead of ground coffee? +

Several units on this page do both. The Outin Nano works with grounds and with Nespresso Original style pods, and the Wacaco Pixapresso accepts either in a single body. Capsules trade flavour control for speed and a much easier cleanup, which is why people choose them for cars and hotels. If a unit ships set up for one format only, an adapter kit is usually the part that switches it.

How many shots does a battery unit give per charge? +

It depends entirely on whether the water has to be heated on board. Outin publishes around five brews per charge for the Nano when it heats cold water from its 7500 mAh cell, and more than 200 when you supply hot water yourself. That Ratio holds broadly across self-heating designs. If you are heading somewhere without power for several days, either carry a kettle or pick a manual lever instead.

What does an AeroPress do differently from a lever model? +

Different physics. The AeroPress is an immersion device with gentle hand pressure, introduced in 2005 with a patented three in one method that borrows from French press, pour over and espresso. It produces a full-bodied cup rather than a true pressurised shot with crema. A lever or battery unit builds far higher pressure through a fine puck. Want long coffee and easy cleanup, take the press. Want a short shot, take the lever.

Which option suits a multi-day camping trip without power? +

A manual lever such as the Flair GO or the Nomad, in most cases. Battery units are convenient but need recharging, which is difficult over several days without a vehicle or a solar setup. Levers need only hot water, so they hold up better on longer trips. You will still need heat for the water and a grinder that goes fine. Our camping range covers the kettles and mugs that go with it.
