Portable Espresso Machines That Brew Real Coffee, Anywhere

Wacaco, Flair, AeroPress, Outin and more. Australian stock, fast delivery.

Not every espresso shot requires a power point. Our portable espresso range spans from the AeroPress GO Plus, the travel-optimised version of the world's most widely tested manual brewer, through to the Outin Nano, which self-heats to 92°C and pulls up to 20 bars of pressure from a rechargeable battery. Every product here has earned its place. We've been sourcing the best portable coffee makers in Australia since 1999.

Portable espresso is a broader category than most people expect. Three distinct brewing approaches appear across this range:

Manual pump and lever machines: Wacaco Picopresso, Wacaco Nanopresso, and Flair NEO Flex require water you've pre-heated to temperature. The Picopresso uses a standard 52mm filter basket with up to 18g of ground coffee, reaches a maximum of 18 bar, and weighs 350g. It earned a Red Dot Award in 2022. The Flair NEO Flex is a lever-press design that gives you manual control over pressure. Both require an ultra-fine espresso grind and consistent technique.

Battery-powered self-heating units: the Outin Nano skips the external kettle entirely. The Nano heats cold water to 92°C in approximately 200 seconds, using a 7,500mAh battery. It supports both ground coffee and Nespresso Original capsules, weighs 670g, and can produce up to five cold-water brews or over 200 hot-water brews per charge.

Air-pressure brewers: the AeroPress Original, AeroPress XL, and AeroPress GO Plus operate on a different principle. Gentle air pressure produces a clean, concentrated cup. Not technically espresso in the commercial sense, but versatile and forgiving for travel use.

Grind quality separates good results from disappointing ones across all three types. Every ground-coffee unit here requires a fine-to-medium espresso grind — a quality hand coffee grinder is the difference between a properly dialled in result and a wasted shot.

How to choose your portable espresso maker

Do you want to heat your own water? This is the most important fork in the road. Manual pump machines (Wacaco, Flair NEO Flex) need water already at temperature, typically 90–95°C. A camping stove or travel kettle becomes part of the kit. If you want a self-contained unit that heats its own water from cold, the Outin Nano is the answer: USB or 12V car chargeable, no external heat source required.

Ground coffee or capsules? Several units are ground-coffee-only: the Wacaco Picopresso, Nanopresso, and Flair NEO Flex all use their own filter baskets. If you want Nespresso Original capsule compatibility, the Outin Nano supports both grounds and capsules. The Wacaco Nanopresso NS Combo is built specifically for capsule use. The Timemore x Nuttii is a capsule-first design.

How much does weight and pack size matter? The Wacaco Picopresso is 350g and packs into its own protective case. The Outin Nano at 670g is heavier but eliminates the kettle from your total kit weight. The AeroPress GO Plus includes a travel cup and lid system designed to pack neatly into a bag. For carry-on travel, the Picopresso or AeroPress GO Plus is the compact choice.

Barista control or easy brewing? The Picopresso and Flair NEO Flex are for people who want to engage with extraction — grind, dose, tamp, and pull like they would on a home machine. The MHW-3Bomber Sonic S7 offers a similarly hands-on manual espresso experience. For those who prefer simplicity over control, the AeroPress or Outin Nano is more forgiving of inconsistent technique.

Camping kit or solo travel? The Nomad Camping Kit bundles a brewer, a Timemore C3 grinder, and 250g of coffee in one purchase — the clearest entry point for camping coffee. For individual travel, any unit from the Wacaco range pairs neatly with a compact hand grinder.

We know from 25 years in coffee equipment that the grinder determines the cup more than the machine does. A quality burr grinder transforms portable espresso. Capsule options sidestep grind quality but limit your coffee to pod format. Our espresso coffee range gives ground-coffee users far more variety.

MHW-3Bomber holds Gold Sponsor status at the 2025 World Barista Championship. Coffee Parts is the authorised Australian distributor. The MHW-3Bomber Sonic S7 Manual Espresso Machine in this range carries that championship pedigree. When the world's best baristas choose which sponsors to compete alongside, build quality and consistency are non-negotiable, and that credential carries through to every MHW product we stock.

A portable espresso machine brews the shot. Here's what completes the kit:

Grinder: A quality hand coffee grinder is non-negotiable for ground-coffee machines. Timemore C3, 1Zpresso JX, and Porlex Mini are proven travel partners that pack light and grind consistently.

Filters: AeroPress users need paper micro-filters; we carry all formats in our paper filters range. The Wacaco Minipresso GR2 Baskets Set is available separately for expanded basket options.

Coffee: Fresh espresso-roast beans make a material difference to the result. Browse espresso coffee from Australian roasters.

Travel case: Outin EVA Protective Case, Wacaco Pixapresso Protective Case, and Wacaco Minipresso GR2 Travel Case are all stocked in this category.

We've tested most of what's in this category in real conditions: a campfire morning, a hotel room with nothing but a kettle, pulling a double from a Picopresso after a long day on the water. Honest view: the grinder matters more than the machine. Get the grind right and most of these brewers will produce something genuinely good. Get it wrong and no amount of pressure will save the cup. Start with the grinder. Then choose your portable espresso machine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best portable espresso machine for camping in Australia? +

For ground coffee with manual effort, the Wacaco Picopresso is a strong option — 350g, maximum 18 bar pressure, standard 52mm filter basket, Red Dot Award winner 2022. For a self-contained unit that heats its own water from cold, the Outin Nano runs on a 7,500mAh battery and reaches 92°C without a separate kettle or stove. For a complete ready-to-go camping setup, the Nomad Camping Kit bundles a brewer, a Timemore C3 grinder, and 250g of coffee in one purchase.

Do I need to boil water separately for a portable espresso maker? +

For most manual pump and lever machines, including the Wacaco Picopresso, Nanopresso, and Flair NEO Flex, yes. These require water pre-heated to around 90–95°C, which means a camping stove or travel kettle is part of your kit. The Outin Nano is the clear exception: it self-heats cold water internally using its battery, reaching 92°C in approximately 200 seconds. No external heat source required.

Can I use coffee capsules in a portable espresso machine? +

Yes, several options in this range support Nespresso Original-format capsules. The Outin Nano is compatible with both ground coffee and Nespresso Original pods. The Wacaco Nanopresso NS Combo is designed around capsule use. The Timemore x Nuttii Portable Espresso Coffee Machine is a capsule-first design. The Wacaco Picopresso and Flair NEO Flex are ground-coffee-only units using their own filter baskets.

What grind size do I need for a Wacaco or Flair portable espresso machine? +

Ultra-fine: the same grind you'd use on a conventional espresso machine. The Wacaco Picopresso specifies an ultra-fine grind and uses an 18g stainless steel filter basket. The Flair NEO Flex similarly demands precise grind and tamp. A coarse grind produces a thin, under-extracted shot regardless of machine quality. This is why pairing either with a quality hand grinder (1Zpresso, Timemore, or Porlex) makes a real difference to the result.

How many shots can the Outin Nano produce per charge? +

The Outin Nano's 7,500mAh battery supports up to five brews when using cold water: the battery drives both heating and pumping. When using pre-heated hot water, the heating element is bypassed and the battery supports over 200 brews per charge. For most travel and camping use, cold-water mode delivers five shots per charge.

Is the AeroPress a real espresso maker? +

Not in the commercial sense. The AeroPress uses air pressure rather than the 9-bar pump pressure of a conventional espresso machine, so it does not extract the same oils or produce true crema. It produces a strong, smooth, concentrated brew that works well as the base for a travel-style long black or milk drink. For true espresso pressure and crema, the Wacaco Picopresso or Flair NEO Flex is the step up.

What is the difference between the Wacaco Picopresso and Wacaco Nanopresso? +

The Picopresso is Wacaco's pro-oriented unit: it uses a standard 52mm naked portafilter with an 18g filter basket, requires precise grind and tamp, and delivers a double espresso with genuine barista input. It weighs 350g and won a Red Dot Award in 2022. The Nanopresso uses a self-contained piston pump with a smaller basket and is more accessible for casual travel use. Both reach a maximum of 18 bar pressure.
