The best coffee in the world is made without a machine.

Pour over, AeroPress, moka pot, French press: the considered tools of brewed coffee.

Manual brewing makes coffee by hand using water, time, and gravity instead of a pump. Pour over, AeroPress, French press, moka pot, and cold brew are common manual methods.

Without a pump or a portafilter, brewed coffee comes down to water, time, and gravity. A Hario V60 with fresh water and well-rested beans. An AeroPress on a Sunday with nowhere to be. A Bialetti Moka Express on a camping stove. We've been curating the tools for these moments since 1999 — drippers, kettles, scales, paper filters, hand grinders, and the simple, considered objects that get used for life.

Manual brewing is where coffee gets honest. There's no machine to do the work for you. Every variable lands on the person making the brew.

What actually changes the cup

Three things decide whether a manual brew tastes good: water quality, grind consistency, and pour control. The dripper, the kettle, and the scale are the instruments — the technique is the music. We supply pour over equipment, gooseneck kettles, and brew scales chosen by people who use them daily.

What we've watched stand up

The Hario V60 has been on the World Brewers Cup stage more than any other dripper. The AeroPress, invented in 2005, has its own world championship, won by Sydney's Jibbi Little in 2022. The Bialetti Moka Express, in production since 1933, is the longest-running coffee object in the catalogue. We know which ones earn their place over a decade of daily use, and which ones don't.

What it isn't

Manual brewing is not espresso. It's brewed coffee: longer drinks, lighter body, more clarity, less crema. If you've come here looking for a portafilter machine, that's our home coffee machines range.

There's no single 'best' manual brewer. The right one is the method that matches your morning. Here's how we'd point you.

Best manual brewer for a clean filter cup: start with a Hario V60

The Hario V60 is the most-used dripper on the World Brewers Cup stage. Matt Perger, an Australian, won the 2012 WBrC in Vienna with one. Tetsu Kasuya won the 2016 WBrC in Dublin with a V60 and gave the world the 4:6 method, still the global default V60 recipe. Hario also released the Kasuya Model, the only V60 designed by a World Brewers Cup champion. The Hario V60 02 is the standard ceramic size; the Hario V60 Mugen is the one-pour beginner version. A V60 brew rewards a steady, slow pour and a precise grind. Pair it with a gooseneck kettle and a brew scale.

Best manual brewer for daily forgiveness and travel: choose AeroPress

The AeroPress is the most-recipe-friendly brewer ever made. Light pressure, full immersion, fast cleanup. Sydney's Jibbi Little won the 2022 World AeroPress Championship with one. It travels well, brews on a camping stove, and tolerates a wider grind window than a V60. Replace the paper filters, or step up to the AeroPress Stainless Steel Reusable Filter Disk; both are in our AeroPress range.

French press vs moka pot: which gives fuller body?

A French press gives you a heavier cup with oils intact, brewed by full immersion. A Bialetti Moka Express brews near-espresso strength on the stovetop and has been doing so since 1933. Different drinks, different rituals.

Best manual brewer for a household or office

For volume, our batch brew section covers SCA-certified machines like the Moccamaster. For summer, look at cold brew and the Cafe de Kona Slow Drip Ice Brewer. Both serve a group without rationing.

How much should you spend, and where?

Spend on the grinder before the dripper. A $40 Hario V60 with a quality burr grinder will always beat a $200 dripper with a blade grinder. We've tested both ends of that trade since 1999. Our manual coffee grinder section starts with the Timemore C5, which we're the exclusive Australian distributor for.

Australia owns the founding chapter of the World Brewers Cup. Matt Perger, an Australian, won the second-ever WBrC in Vienna in 2012 with a Hario V60. A decade later, Sydney's Jibbi Little won the 2022 World AeroPress Championship. Coffee Parts is Timemore's exclusive Australian distributor; Timemore was Top Sponsor of the 2025 World Brewers Cup in Jakarta. The brands powering the world's biggest brewing competitions run through us.

Most manual brewing setups need four things alongside the dripper: a grinder, a kettle, a scale, and the right paper.

  • Grinder: Timemore C5 for filter-coarse, hand-powered grinding.
  • Kettle: gooseneck for pour control, manual or electric, see our kettle range.
  • Scale: brew bar scales hold a server and time the pour, see coffee scales. The Cafe de Kona LED Screen Coffee Scale is a popular entry point.
  • Paper filters: V60, wave, or Chemex paper, rinsed before use, see paper filters.

We've watched what people buy alongside their first dripper and add it back six months later. Start with this kit and you won't be re-ordering the basics.

My dad started Coffee Parts in 1999 to keep a Faema E61 running. The brew bar, the V60 and AeroPress and Bialetti Moka, wasn't where the business began, but it's where a lot of our customers come back to. People who own a Linea Mini still brew V60 on weekends. The setup is honest. The variables are yours. The cup is whatever you make it. We've sold these tools for a quarter of a century, and the simple ones still earn their keep.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is manual brewing in coffee? +

Manual brewing means making coffee without an electric pump or pressure machine. Water, gravity, immersion, and (in the case of a moka pot) stovetop pressure do the extraction. Pour over (Hario V60, Chemex), AeroPress, French press, Bialetti Moka Express, syphon, and cold brew are all manual methods.

What is the best manual brewer for beginners? +

The AeroPress is the most forgiving starting point. It tolerates a wide grind range, cleans up in seconds, and has more published recipes than any other brewer. From there, a Hario V60 02 or the one-pour Hario V60 Mugen teaches pour control and grind precision. Both are in our manual brewing range.

Hario V60 vs AeroPress: which is better? +

The Hario V60 makes a cleaner, tea-like cup with brighter acidity; it is also the dripper that has won the World Brewers Cup more times than any other. The AeroPress is faster, more forgiving on grind size, and travels well. Choose V60 for clarity. Choose AeroPress for daily flexibility.

How much should I spend on a manual brewing setup? +

A complete starter setup (brewer plus paper plus a brew scale plus a hand grinder like the Timemore C5) sits at the entry level of the category. The single largest jump in cup quality comes from upgrading the grinder, not the brewer. Spend on the grinder first.

How do I brew a Hario V60 with the 4:6 method? +

The 4:6 method, invented by 2016 World Brewers Cup champion Tetsu Kasuya, splits 300g of water into a 40 percent and 60 percent pour structure over 20g of medium-coarse coffee. The first 40 percent controls sweetness and acidity; the last 60 percent controls strength. Total brew time around three minutes.

What grind size do I need for manual brewing? +

It depends on the method. Coarser for French press and cold brew, around sea-salt texture. Medium for Hario V60, Kalita Wave, and batch brew, around table-salt. Finer for AeroPress, between V60 and espresso. Bialetti Moka Express sits just above espresso fine.

Do I need a gooseneck kettle for pour over? +

For Hario V60, Chemex, and Kalita Wave, yes. A gooseneck spout gives direct control of pour rate and pour location, which both directly affect extraction. For French press, AeroPress, or Bialetti moka pot, a regular kettle is fine. We stock both electric and manual gooseneck kettles.

Does Coffee Parts stock spare parts for manual brewers? +

Yes. We stock paper filters, reusable filters, gaskets, seals, and replacement components for AeroPress, Hario V60, Bialetti Moka Express, and most major manual brewing brands. We've been the parts retailer for Australian baristas and technicians since 1999.
